There is a tradition of bringing Gangajal filled
The famous prophet Anish Vyas told that Sawan is said to be the month of Lord Shiva. According to the scriptures, in ancient times, with the help of demonic sailors, warriors and laborers, the joint campaign of churning the ocean was started in the month of Sawan itself. Fourteen gems – Lakshmi, Kamadhenu, Uchhaiah, Shrava, Moon, Kaustubh, Kalpavriksha, Varuni, Parijat, Dhanvantari, Amrit, Airavat, Halahal etc. were found from this churning. There was a fierce dispute between the Devas and the Asuras in their distribution. The gods kept twelve precious gems for themselves. Only Varuni fell in the hands of the poor asuras. When the fourteenth destructive gem, Halahal, came to the fore, the world was threatened with destruction. No claimant for this poison was found. In order to save the universe from the deadly effects of this poison, Shiva, equally dear to the Devas and Asuras, accepted to take this poison himself. This poison collected in his throat, due to which he got the name of Neelkanth. In order to reduce the heat of the poison in his body, the Gods had anointed him by bringing Gangajal from far and wide. Since then there is a tradition of Shiva devotees taking water from the holy Ganges and offering it to various Jyotirlingas and Shiva temples in India in the month of Sawan.
