New Delhi : The major events of 9th July in Indian and world history are as follows.
1533 – Chaitanya Deva, the religious preacher, died.
1816 – The South American country of Argentina gained independence from Spain.
1852 – In the Canadian city of Montreal, 1100 construction sites are destroyed by a terrible fire.
1875 – Bombay Stock Exchange is established.
1877 – The first Wimbledon tennis tournament was held.
1925 – Birth of Guru Dutt, famous Bollywood actor, film producer and director.
1944 – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose accepted the leadership of the Azad Hind Fauj for the independence of India.
1951 – First Five Year Plan (1951-56) started.
1969- Lion was chosen as the national animal of the country by the Wildlife Board.
1972 – The then Soviet Russia conducted an underground nuclear test.
1991 – South Africa is allowed to participate in the Olympic Games again.
2002 – Establishment of the African Union in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. South African President Thabo Mbeki became its first president.
2006 – At least 122 people are killed when a Shibir Airlines A310 crashes on the runway of Irkurtsk Airport in Siberia.
2011 – South Sudan gains independence from Sudan.
