Famous cartoonist Narayan Debnath passed away, CM Mamta expressed grief

Kolkata: Cartoonist and author of Bengali comic roles such as “Bantul the Great”, “Handa-Bonda” and “Nonte Fonte”, Narayan Debnath, died at a Kolkata hospital on Tuesday morning after prolonged illness. Hospital sources gave this information. Debnath was admitted to the hospital for treatment and was 97 years old. The hospital official said that Padma Shri awardee Debnath breathed his last at around 10.15 am. He was admitted to a private hospital on December 24 and was put on life support system (ventilator). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled his death.

Expressing condolence, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "It is a matter of great sadness that the famous litterateur, painter, cartoonist and creator of some immortal characters for the children’s world, Narayan Debnath is no more. He made cartoons like Bantul the Great. Handa-bhonda, nonte-fonte, that have been etched in our hearts for decades."

Mamta Banerjee also wrote, "We were proud to have honored him with Bangavibhushan, the highest award of Bengal in 2013. His death is certainly an irreparable loss to literary creativity and the world of comics. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, readers and countless fans and followers."
