Diego Maradona’s doctor targeted by manslaughter investigation
Diego Maradona’s doctor is the subject of an investigation for manslaughter four days after the death of the football idol, at the age of 60, from a cardiac arrest at his home, announced Sunday the public prosecutor’s office of San Isidro, near Buenos Areas.
Police raided the office and home of Doctor Leopoldo Luque on Sunday looking for evidence of possible professional negligence, according to the prosecution and images broadcast on television.
“In Argentina, Maradona arouses a visceral identification within the popular classes”
This questioning of Doctor Luque, who had operated on Maradona for a hematoma on the head at the beginning of the month, does not automatically imply police custody or deprivation of liberty, said these judicial sources.
Statements from relatives behind the investigation
This investigation was triggered by statements from Dalma, Gianinna and Jana, three daughters from Maradona, on how the former footballer’s heart problem was managed at his residence in Tigre, north of the Argentine capital.
Maradona, the proletarian with golden feet
“We are continuing the investigations by collecting testimonies, including those of members of the family” of Diego Maradona, a San Isidro judicial source said.
Dr Luque, contacted by AFP, declined to comment.
